What are Self-Limiting Beliefs?
Some of the most difficult obstacles you may face when you want to improve your life are limiting beliefs. Most of the time, you probably don’t even think about your beliefs, let alone understand just how much influence they have over everything you do.
Limiting beliefs can have the power to stop you from making the positive changes you desire. They are subconscious programs running constantly in the back of your mind, conflicting with your desires and intentions. They can prevent you from wanting to make positive changes at all, or even if you can overcome that initial resistance, they can cause you to sabotage your efforts and slide back into destructive habits before you gain any significant momentum.
Very often, your beliefs about yourself, your abilities, and the way the world works are the culprits holding you back.
For example, you may have a belief that you don’t have what it takes to be successful. Maybe you even have a long string of things that have not worked out in your past that you can point to and say, “see, I can never be successful”.
Whenever you try take on new goals or try to do anything that may result in a successful outcome, you end up sabotaging yourself or making poor decisions that create yet another failure.
Like most other people when this happens you may push harder. Work longer hours. Study your chosen field and become an ‘expert’. You might take the mind-set improvement courses, business courses, sales and marketing courses. You think to yourself, “If I can just learn more and become better at what I do, I won’t fail this time”.
But the failures just keep happening ( if you even bother to try at all) simply because you have not changed your underlying belief that you will never be successful, no matter what you do.
Until you change your underlying beliefs that are preventing you from moving forward, you cannot take enough actions to overcome those inner blockages.
Your beliefs don’t just affect your level of success, they affect every aspect of your life. Your relationships, your body, your income, your finances, your career, absolutely everything is governed by your existing set of beliefs.
Until you change those underlying beliefs, little else will change.
So how do you know you have some of these limiting beliefs?
- You act in ways that are contrary to your goals
- You feel ‘stuck’ much of the time.
- Everything you try to do seems exceedingly difficult.
- You keep sabotaging your efforts and can’t figure out why
- Making positive changes in your life seems harder than it should be.
Does any of this sound familiar to you? If so then don’t despair as absolutely everyone has at least a few limiting beliefs that threaten to hold them back.
Identifying and clearing limiting beliefs and replacing them with new, empowering beliefs is a process that can be learned through counselling, and hypnotherapy can also definitely help you.
