So many people say it each year – it’s a new year so it’s going to be a new me… then often, by February, all resolutions have fallen by the wayside and we end up feeling worse about ourselves than we did the previous year.
The thing is; you don’t actually need a totally new you because the one that already exists is pretty great. However, there is nothing wrong with a little self-improvement especially if it helps drive you forwards towards meeting your life goals.
For some reason, we think the flip of a calendar and the entering of a brand-new year is enough to motivate us into total transformation; it isn’t. But, as we said, self-improvement can only be seen as a good thing, but it is about choosing completely do-able and achievable goals that will help spur you on throughout the year. Making our goals specific and attainable means you know exactly what it is you need to do to accomplish them, then you go out there and do it.
Small changes all add up in the end, so start small and watch the huge end result. So, what little things can you do to make a BIG difference in 2020?
If you start a day off negatively then chances are it will continue that way. Positive affirmations repeated for a few minutes each morning can really help you on your way for the day and in general, have a more positive outlook.
We often put off our most challenging tasks until they appear to be completely insurmountable. Make a to-do list each day and at the top of it put your MOST challenging task of the day. Tackle it first and that way it is done and won’t hang over you for the rest of the day, week or month and you can enjoy the rest of each day.
So many people have a resolution to get fitter and go for a run each day or go to the gym 5 times a week. For some, both financially and time-wise, this is simply not achievable. However, making little changes in how you approach things can introduce fitness into your life in a subtle way. For example, in 2020 why don’t you make a pledge to always take the stairs and never the lift. This can be a great way to get you into the habit of moving more and encourage a more active lifestyle overall.
Each week, take a moment to tell a friend or family member something you have achieved that week. It doesn’t have to be huge – you saved £5 on your shopping, you went for a walk or you got a new client at work. However big or small, it is important to celebrate our wins to show ourselves that we are in fact achieving.
Finally, and possibly most importantly, why not promise to take 10 minutes for yourself each day. Choose something that makes you feel good, like a hot shower, or a nice soak in a bubble bath, a few pages of your book or listening to music or even try some meditation, just do something for you.
A new year doesn’t mean you have to create a new you, but you can go for a better you in 2020!
