Hello and thank you so much for taking the time to look me up, so here is a bit of information about me!
First of all let me reassure you that I am a highly experienced integrated counsellor, psychotherapist, clinical hypnotherapist and personal development coach, and since 2008 I have had the privilege of working with numerous people, helping them to overcome what has been causing them distress and concerns, mainly from my private practice at Swans Therapy, in the beautifully leafy and quiet area of Queens Park, Bournemouth.
Within my practice I use a variety of counselling models and techniques in order to give you the best therapeutic treatment that suits your individual needs. I have a friendly, confident and professional manner and should you decide to come to see me, together we will decide what will be the best approach and therapy to meet your needs, and attain your personal goal and achieve personal transformational results.
My purpose and intentions are:
To support you in the very best ways possible: I believe that by my having as many skills possible available for you that they can speed up your personal therapeutic progress, and by responding to your individual specific needs you will achieve your goals and gain the transformation results you desire as quickly as possible.
I believe this approach is best as it has proven successful results as you can read for yourself from the variety of testimonials and recommendations that are posted throughout this site.
My genuine and sincere desire is to serve you and provide a service that is the very best possible.
I have wide experiences throughout the spectrum of issues and concerns and my personal experiences and background has given me a specific interest in areas such as:
- Anxiety & Stress
- Abuse and Trauma
And because it is so important for you to choose the right therapist for you, I offer you a:
Free 20 min Telephone Consultation prior to your Initial First Session AND
Free first initial 20 mins of a 60 min session which is at a reduced rate of £35. In this session you will receive a thorough assessment to identify your requirements, a proposed plan and something useful by way of support to take away with you.
AND all sessions are 60mins as this is the way I prefer to work. Most therapists only provide 50 min sessions which means that you will receive 6 sessions for the price of 5 sessions.
Why did I become a therapist?
I have always been a kind and caring person, even as a little girl I was a very good listener, my friends would confide in me just because they knew I could really keep a secret and be trusted!
However, my natural creative talents and artistic skills led me into my first career of and realising my ambition of becoming a fashion designer. But after working in the Fashion Design industry for a few years I decided the actual fashion business mechanics was not for me. But the designing skills, pattern making, tailoring and the making of clothes has never left me and has been a fantastic resource whenever I have needed to turn my hand to making extra income, including while undergoing my therapy training.
After experiencing a disastrous abusive marriage but from which I gained two beautiful children, I returned to study, gained a degree and my life took a very different path when I became a Secondary School teacher, not in Art or Textiles as most would expect, but in the very unsexy subject of RE, Religious Education! This turned out to be great as I taught it as a subject that was not only spiritual and religious but as a cultural sociological, philosophical and psychological subject too and the students really enjoyed and responded to this. Indeed, the head teacher allowed me to rename the subject Cultural Studies which was quite radical at the time. As the curriculum leader of this subject and also the whole school leader for PSHCE – Personal, Social, Health, Careers Education it was probably inevitable that after almost 20 years of teaching, my life path and career would take yet another direction.
So my interest in counselling and therapies began as a natural progression from within my responsibilities of these two core subjects and within my role as a teacher and tutor in which I worked closely with students and their families, helping with the various social issues which impacted their day to day lives. As a result, I became interested in how therapeutic counselling could make such a positive difference to the quality of their lives and relationships. So I made the ‘brave’ or ‘mad’ decision (depending on my friends perspective) to retrain as a therapist and go through the transition of being a full time to part time teacher to part time then full time counsellor and therapist with my own private practice supported by my partner and now husband, John Sackett.

My Passion for My Work
I do love learning and the work I do never ceases to fascinate me. I have a strong desire to keep learning more and more about the complexities of the human mind, spirit and behaviour. I really enjoy continually learning, growing and personally developing myself, my skills and abilities, so I am very passionate about CPD, Continuing Professional Development, which in turn comes back to the quality service I can then give to you. I attend various further training, conferences and workshops as often as possible, which keeps my professional services fresh and updated and maintained to the highest of professional standards and to ensure my service remains ethically safe and sound, I also attend regular supervision with my both my counselling & psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy supervisors, and my various specific mentors, and peer support groups.
Specialised Continuing Professional Development
I have also received incredible specialised expert training and worked within the charity sector both as a 1 to 1 volunteer counsellor for Dorset Action on Abuse, renamed Hurting2Healing, based in Poole, Dorset and as a group support facilitator for Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse. From these experiences I became a trustee and founder member of another charity supporting the Non – Abusive Parents and Carers of Children who have been abused.
Over the years my continued studies have led me to become qualified in a number of other methods of healing treatments including within the field of healing energy therapies to become both a Reiki Master Teacher and a fully trained and qualified EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Practitioner. Together with my other therapeutic skills these enable me to offer you a truly holistic approach and service to you should you require it?
Speaker and Author
I am an accomplished and confident speaker and writer who is available to talk to groups, business or networking meetings, and conferences, whether it is online via Zoom or for a podcast, or in person as part of a presentation or as a keynote speaker. In addition, I am able to contribute to magazines or blogs a guest writer.
My first book, From Hole to Whole: Embracing the Transformation Power of Grief and Loss was published in December 2020 becoming an Amazon bestseller. In it, I distil and share the knowledge gained from my own painful journey since the death of my son in October 2018, underpinned by my professional knowledge and expertise as a counsellor and therapist.
Consequently, I have a wealth of experience and information to share including the conscious and spiritual expansion which I write about in my book which makes for engaging, interesting and highly relevant talks appropriate for everyone.
I have my own website which focuses on the concepts included in the book together with resources and support for anyone who is on a grief journey or who are supporting others through this difficult time- click here: www.joysackettwood.com
Here are just a couple examples of reviews that people have wanted to give:
Mrs Y. G. from Bournemouth – Coping with Illness – M.E. + Agorophobia and Panic Attacks, said:
Thank you Joy, for helping me to turn my life around, for 5 years I have had serious M.E. following the removal of a brain tumour. I had 5 nervous breakdowns that kept putting me back to bed for a year and then 3 years mainly housebound with constant headaches, dizziness and pain everywhere. I had dreadful agoraphobia and panic attacks if I tried to go outside.
The isolation and loneliness was depressing as friends and family just got on with their lives and the medical profession could offer no help at all. Since that first nervous phone call things have really changed, it turned out I had a whole lot of issues from way back that were never dealt with, I never had anyone to turn to.
You have helped me come to terms with a whole lot of personal past pressures in a relaxed and caring atmosphere. Sometimes counselling got difficult so it was followed by a hypnotherapy for calming and relaxing and best of all inner peace.
Over time, I now have a life, cheerful and positive with more energy. At last I can seek out more interesting and fun courses outside the house. There is a positive future and at last, fun too. What a turnaround – unbelievable! Why did I wait so long to talk to somebody, I am very fortunate to have met you, Joy. Thank you again for your patience with a deep understanding and kindness!
P. D. from Verwood – coping with Anxiety, Stress & Depression, said:
Thank you Joy, you have helped me to focus on the things I can change in my life and taught me how not to dwell on all the other things. I have also learnt how to relax effectively to reduce the anxiety I experience in raising my ten year old autistic son.
Thank you so much for your time in reading this and I hope you find looking through our website useful!
With the warmest of wishes to you.
