Top tips to building confidence

There is a certain sadness around the fact that some people never reach their full potential due to a lack of confidence within themselves. Without confidence and self-esteem, we often won’t make risky decisions and fall back on the safe and familiar.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with that, if you are a driven person or simply want more from life than what you are currently achieving, confidence is a must-have requirement.

Whether you’ve suffered from a lack of confidence your entire life or if something more recent has triggered it, don’t panic! There are ways to build your confidence which you can do alone or working with personal coaches like us to ensure you achieve the goals that might currently feel out of reach.


You’d be surprised how much visualisation can help. The idea is to see an image of yourself that you are proud of, in your own mind. When we have issues with low self-confidence, we have a poor image or perception of ourselves that is more often than not, totally inaccurate. Practice visualisations of you achieving your goals.

Our behaviour tends to match the image we have of ourselves but in order for us to succeed and gain more confidence, we need to change that.

Affirmations are positive and uplifting statements that we say to ourselves. Usually they are more effective if said out loud so that you can hear yourself saying them, but it will never do any harm repeating them in your mind too.

You should pick an area of yourself or your life you want to help with affirmations and choose 3 such as “I will succeed,” “I am capable of doing anything” and “I know what I am doing and I am good at it.” Repeat these to yourself for 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the evening.

Self-confidence depends on a lot of things, but the key factors are good physical health, emotional health and social health. It is hard to feel good about yourself if you hate your physique or constantly have low energy. That is why self-care is so important – you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Make time to exercise – even if you just walk to and from work. Make sure you also take a look at your eating and sleeping habits; are you getting enough sleep, and do you have a balanced diet with everything your body needs?

Also, think about what you wear and dress the way you want to feel. You have heard the saying that “clothes make the man.” It’s not called a power suit for no reason!
