Dealing with the Overwhelm of Parenthood

No matter how much you read, buy or get ready, nothing can really and truly prepare you for becoming a parent. You can have a knowledge and understanding of how to care for a baby but when your own arrives the feelings that engulf you are unlike any other and parenthood is both an emotional and physical rollercoaster.

Each person deals with parenthood in different ways; the highs and lows, the milestones and the sleep deprivation, but there is no denying that it can leave a lot of people feeling overwhelmed.

Overwhelm can manifest itself as an intense emotion whether it be anxiety, anger, worry, doubt or even helplessness.

Whatever the reason behind your overwhelm, there are ways of dealing with it that will help ease the intense feelings that go hand in hand with it.


It might sound bizarre but actually accepting your feelings, goes a long way towards helping alleviate some of the burden of them. Denying your feelings can often apply pressure and increase the intensity of them so pay attention to what your mind and body is trying to tell you.

A Positive Mindset

Part of the battle of overwhelm are damaging thoughts from our own minds which unknowingly apply pressure in an already intense situation. Thoughts like “I’ll never be able to do this” are damaging.

Stop and think to yourself whether or not the damaging thought is actually true or how much it is true. Next, consider how you can think more realistically, “I’ll soon get the hang of this” Here, your goal is to generate alternative thoughts that will lead to positive emotions and behaviour.


When you’re consumed with what may or may not happen in several minutes or months, you can’t appreciate the here and now. Instead, schedule time to plan for the future, so you can breathe in the present moment.

Take Action

To quell overwhelm, engage in an activity that you enjoy, such as listening to music, reading a book or taking a walk. And consider how you can solve the stressors that triggered your overwhelm in the first place.
